Helping parents make informed, research-based language decisions for their children
Raising multilingual children is a journey filled with questions:
How do languages find their place in everyday family life?
What supports the maintenance of home languages over time?
How do literacy, school languages, and new environments influence children’s linguistic choices?
These questions become particularly pressing for families living abroad or in contexts where their home languages have little social visibility. While there are no universal answers, there are ways of understanding what is happening and of making thoughtful, well-informed decisions.
My workshops and webinars invite parents to step back and look at multilingual development more clearly. Drawing on current research in linguistics and multilingualism, I offer conceptual perspectives, real-life examples, and structured reflection that help parents interpret their children’s language use and consider possible paths forward. The focus is not on following fixed rules, but on developing confidence through understanding.
Sessions are interactive and adapted to the needs of the group, whether they take place within a parent association, daycare, school, or a private parent network.
These workshops are designed for
- Parents raising children with more than one language
- Parent groups seeking a structured, research-informed space for reflection
- Families living abroad who want to better understand language maintenance and change
- Caregivers interested in literacy, language exposure, and cultural transmission without one-size-fits-all advice
What we explore
Rather than offering prescriptive answers, we explore topics such as:
-
How home languages function in everyday family interaction
-
What supports literacy development across languages over time
-
How and when additional languages can be introduced in a sustainable way
-
How dominant school or societal languages influence children’s choices
-
Why children may show preferences for certain languages
-
How families can respond to challenges without creating pressure or conflict
The emphasis is on recognizing patterns, understanding underlying dynamics, and broadening perspectives.
