The Importance of Intercultural Communication
Effective communication is the cornerstone of successful collaboration and harmonious relationships. In international settings, understanding and respecting cultural differences can significantly enhance productivity, creativity, and overall well-being.
Our plan aims to equip you with the tools and strategies needed to overcome cultural barriers and foster a more understanding environment.
Ute's S.M.A.R.T. Intercultural Communication Plan© for International Teams and Multilingual Families
Specific Goals:
- For International Teams, our goal is to improve cultural awareness and sensitivity, leading to better collaboration and productivity.
- For Multilingual Families, we aim to foster a bilingual and culturally rich environment, enhancing communication and understanding among family members.
Measurable Objectives:
- We share with you how you can track progress, increases in inclusive language use, and improvements in cultural understanding.

Relevant Strategies:
- For International Teams, Intercultural topics are integrated into the training (and follow up sessions) that encourage open dialogue to identify areas for improvement.
- Multilingual Families use specific strategies and resources to enhance their intercultural and multilingual journey.
Time-bound Milestones:
- International Teams set achievable and measurable goals to improve their inclusive language use within a set time frame. Progress will be reviewed regularly.
- Multilingual Families develop and implement short and long-term language plans that include multilingual and multicultural activities within a set time frame. Progress will be reviewed regularly.
Implementation Steps
For International Teams:
- Assessment and Planning: Before the training we start by assessing current cultural awareness and communication skills, then develop a detailed plan to focus on.
- Training and Education: Teams will participate in a 2-3 hour cultural awareness workshop/webinar and access online resources to enhance their intercultural understanding and communication skills.
- Ongoing Engagement: The teams will make sure to foster diversity and inclusion on a regular basis. They can revert to Ute's advice for further cultural activities and on how to keep an open dialogue that fosters a deeper understanding of cultural differences.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Depending on the agreement with Ute, she will help you track progress, and feedback will be gathered to ensure the plan's effectiveness.
- Review and Adjustment: Depending on the agreement with Ute, a comprehensive review of the intercultural communication plan will be conducted to make necessary adjustments based on feedback and results.
For Multilingual Families:

- Training and Education: Families will participate in a 2-3 hours cultural awareness workshop/webinar where their multilingual language use and cultural understanding will be trained. They will get access to online recourses to enhance their intercultural understanding and communication skills.
